Mobile solutions in CNH Polska

BCS Polska installing in Case New Holland (CNH) a wireless network based on the Motorola WS5100 switch, furnishing the plant workers with the MC9090 portable terminals, and installing Zebra label printers.

The company

Case New Holland (CNH) is a world leader in the agricultural and construction equipment businesses. The CNH-branded equipment is distributed in eleven countries through a network of eleven thousand dealers. The majority shareholder of CNH Global, whose shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is Fiat S.p.A., the parent company of the Fiat Group. The company operates 41 manufacturing facilities in Europe, North and South America and Asia. The Polish branch, with its seat in Płock, is among the key facilities owned by CNH. Almost every fourth tractor bought in Poland has been manufactured in Płock.

Problem to be solved

CNH is the only manufacturer of grain-harvesting combines in Poland and one of the first companies in the group to upgrade the reporting and monitoring systems by way of introducing an automatic identification technology.

For specialists from CNH starting point was to identify two principal business objectives. The first one was to build a real-time reporting system for the purpose of production planning, and the second one – to create an information platform for CNH customers, which would enable them to follow the consecutive stages of the ordered machinery production process.
CNH received several proposals, yet the decision was a straightforward one. CNH decided to choose the proposal submitted by BCS Polska and Income, which relies on the Motorola equipment, as it was the most comprehensive one and perfectly matched for they needs. BCS Polska and Income have teams of experienced specialists whose expertise was a guarantee of successful implementation of the project.

BCS Polska provided his customer with a full range of Motorola products and a dedicated software designed to manage the mobile system.

Ultimately, the scope of work performed under the contract included installing a wireless network based on the Motorola WS5100 switch, furnishing the plant workers with the MC9090 portable terminals, and installing Zebra label printers. It was a pilot project, implemented across the group.

Solutions

"Huge amounts of data concerning the production process, dispatch and receipt of goods, and deliveries of finished products are collected at the manufacturing facility.

Portable computers contributed to the improvement of the production reporting process and components inventory accounting.
In the harvesting machinery manufacturing facility with a great number of high voltage equipment, such as overhead cranes, tin laser cutting machinery, lifts, or multilevel conveyor lines for machinery components, there occur electromagnetic field disturbances generated by welding machines and hot presses.
The Motorola equipment functions without any problems at the CNH manufacturing facility." - said Stanisław Basiewicz, Director of IT in CNH Polska.

"Under the contract performed by BCS Polska and Income companies, not only did we furnish CNH with the required equipment, but also we provided the company with the portable terminal application, a communication server, and an interface for the BaaN system, supported by an icDispatcher tool, which facilitates the creation and management of the mobile system. Among other things, the icDispatcher makes it possible to control and manage external devices, such as terminals with built-in barcode readers, pocket PCs and barcode printers."  - said Jacek Cyran, Director of Customer Service in BCS Polska.

icDispatcher is used to create visual effects and to design functionalities for the screens of external devices, as well as to add new screens as needed. Thus, users of external devices are able to access the system directly through portable terminals equipped with barcode readers.

Results

The implemented solution ensures an ongoing flow of data between the production floor and the central management system.

The application of Motorola mobile technology (that comprises a wireless network and portable terminals) makes it possible to monitor the progress of and to control the production process.
The system eliminates errors and disturbances in the production cycle almost entirely.
The solution is operated with a minimum effort required, which is a very important advantage from the point of view of quality and reliability of the system.

"Among other things, the implementation of the project led to the execution of a 7/24 technical support and maintenance service agreement. I strongly believe that CNH will continue their investments in mobile technologies." - said Jacek Cyran, Director of Customer Service in BCS Polska.
