Case Study - Hödlmayr Hungary

The company

Hödlmayr International AG is an internationally active family business, whose core service is vehicle logistics. The company specialises in the preparation and distribution of finished vehicles from production to delivery to the dealer.

Problem to be solved

A detailed survey of actual condition is made on each vehicle enters the company's depot. It means the recording of several hundreds of features, which process was done manually on papers previously. In many cases, incorrect data were recorded, post-documentiation - copy of data to the central database - was very slow and inaccurate, which hindered the further tasks to be done on the vehicle. The question of responsibility - for bad records or lack of correction - also caused problems.

Solution

The solution to the above mentioned problems was electronic data collection with mobile computers through WLAN connection, which made the whole process of recording features much more faster and easier. Thanks to the on-line technology, all further work - necessary to be done on the vehicle - can be predicted even in the stage of first survey. It resulted the increase of effectiveness, and the decrease of time spent on the survey of each vehicle. From logistic point of view, the most important task was to encode the vehicles according to their place on the depot - a position code was given to each chassis number - which helped to identify vehicles in a few seconds.

Hödlmayr beside the customized application - which was integrated to the company's AS/400 ERP system - purchased 9 pcs of Symbol PDT 8146 mobile computer.

Results

The identification and survey of vehicles are more accurate and faster now. The number of recording errors is negligible. Information recorded during the survey, integrate automatically (on-line) to the AS/400 central database, so there is no need for post-documentation and all data are available in time for preparation and execution of further work stages. As a result of more effective work, company could achieve significant turnover growth without increasing the number of employees. The equity of qualitative objections and the question of responsibility can be identified more easily.
